It is a vaccine that is recommended to all female immigrants coming to the US and prevents against Human Papillomavirus, HPV, a sexually transmitted virus that can cause cervical cancer. 11 and 12-year old girls, U.S residents up to age 26 can take the vaccine. It is still unknown to many immigrants and health advocates. What is Gardasil's cost and safety? The Food and Drug Administration approved it in 2006. It blocks strains of the Human Papillomavirus of HPV.

For female immigrants, the requirement went into effect on August 1, 2008. In the U.S., about 4,000 women die of the disease each year. The vaccine works best if given early or before a young woman is sexually active and already might have contracted the virus.
